Christopher Bell comes off his first win of the season last week in Phoenix and returns to Bristol Motor Speedway, where he took the checkered flag in last spring's race. But that victory came on dirt, which has gone away in favor of a return to a 500-lap test on the 0.533-mile oval's regular concrete surface. The dirt experiment lasted three years but the conversion process required 2,700 dump-truck loads of work and a huge removal operation that included power washing the grandstand seats and suite windows and NASCAR announced last fall it was abandoning the controversial format for the race.

Bell led 100 of the 250 laps last year on the dirt and took the checkered flag under caution ahead of Tyler Reddick. With the return to concrete, the race will cover 266.5 miles over 500 laps. Each of the first two race stages will be 125 laps and the final stage wraps in the last 250 turns around the short track.
Rusty Wallace has won a record six times since the spring race was launched at Bristol in 1961 while Kyle Busch leads among active drivers with five victories, most recently in 2019. Darrell Waltrip and Dale Earnhardt were also five-time winners at Bristol in the spring time.
Defending NASCAR Cup champion Ryan Blaney sits atop the standings with a 10-point lead over both 2021 champ Kyle Larson and 2017 Cup holder Martin Truex Jr. William Byron is 17 points behind while Reddick and Ty Gibbs are 21 points back. There have been four different winners in the first four races: Byron, Daniel Suárez, Larson and Bell, all provisionally qualified for the playoffs.
