But on Friday, the three-time defending Formula 1 champion had his breakthrough, turning in a lap of 1:27.472 to grab his 34th career pole and his first on the fast, bendy Jeddah Corniche Circuit. He will start on the front row next to Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who was 0.319 seconds slower with his best trip around the 3.836-mile course. Verstappen is attempting to become the first two-time winner at Jeddah, where Lewis Hamilton fo Mercedes, Verstappen and Red Bull teammate Sergio Pérez have topped the podium on race day.

Pérez claimed the third position in qualifying, with Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin starting fourth. The third row is the McLaren duo of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, with the Mercedes' of George Russell and Hamilton on the fourth row. Yuki Tsunoda of RB Honda and Lance Stroll of Aston Martin round out the top 10 starters.
Ferrari's Carlos Sainz is out of the race due to appendicitis and F2 driver Oliver Bearman qualified 11th in his F1 debut. The Jeddah Corniche Circuit, a temporary street course along the Red Sea, is the fastest street course on the Formula 1 calendar and the third-longest course overall. Drivers will cover 191.662 miles over the 50 laps.
After Saudi Arabia, the Formula 1 circuit takes a weekend off before resuming its record 24-race calendar in Australia.
