For the first time since 2018, the Blue Bay LPGA at Jian Lake Blue Bay Golf Course on China's Hainan Island is back on the schedule and 2016 champion Minjee Lee seized the first-round lead with a seven-under-par 65 on Thursday. The event was not scheduled in 2019 and 2022 while it was canceled in 2020, 2021 and 2023 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Gaby López is the defending champion, having won in 2018, and opened with a one-under-par 71 and is tied for 31st entering Friday's second round. Lee set the tournament record with a 13-under-par 275 in her one-stroke victory in 2016.

Players are competing for the $330,000 winner's share of the $2.2 million purse — the largest since the tournament launched in 2014 — as well as 500 points in the Race to the CME Globe standings.
Sarah Schmelzel is joined by Chinese natives Ruixin Liu and Miranda Wang in second place at six-under-par. Caroline Inglis, Luci Li and Hye-Jin Choi shot first-round 67s to forge a tie for fifth while Roberta Lili, Lydia Ko, Olivia Cowan, Hee Young Park and Bailey Tardy are all at four-under-par and tied for eighth.
The top-ranked player in the Rolex Women's World Golf Rankings, Lilia Vu, shot an even-par 72 and is tied for 43rd place entering the second round.
