Scott Piercy and Joe Highsmith completed their rounds on Thursday in the first round of the Puerto Rico Open, but with half the field still on the course at the already rain-soaked Grand Reserve Country Club in Río Grande, play was suspended after six more inches of rain hit the area, with the round scheduled to resume ahead of Friday's second round. Piercy and Highsmith carded seven-under-par 65s before play was halted, one shot ahead of Brice Garnett, Garrick Higgo and Erik Barnes. The tournament is being held opposite this week's signature event, the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, Florida. Defending champion Nico Echevarria is part of a large group tied for ninth at four-under-par after an opening-round 68.

Of the 132 players in the field, 66 still have to finish the first round. Satoshi Kodaira, Rasmus Højgaard and Richy Werenski completed their rounds in 67 and are tied for sixth at five-under-par. Of the 12 players tied at four-under-par, five didn't finish their rounds, including Taiga Semikawa, who was four-under through just six holes.
Players are competing for a $720,000 share of the $4 million purse along with 300 FedExCup points. The tournament became a PGA Tour event in 2008 after two years as part of the defunct Tour de las Américas. Michael Bradley is the lone player to win more than once, taking the title in both 2009 and 2011.
Echavarria beat Akshay Bhatia by two strokes last year, tying the tournament record with a 21-under-par 267 first set by Chesson Hadley in 2014.
