The FCS season all comes down to Sunday afternoon in Frisco. After four rounds of playoffs, the top two overall sends end up meeting in the title game. Reigning champion and top seed South Dakota State (14-0, 8-0 MVFC) is trying to repeat, with second seed Montana (13-1, 7-1 Big Sky) standing in the way. Last year South Dakota State beat North Dakota State in its second-ever appearance in the title game after a loss in 2020. Montana is appearing in the title game for the seventh time, but the first since 2009. The Grizzlies have won two titles in their history, in 1995 and 2001.

Both of these teams won their respective conferences. South Dakota State went unbeaten in the regular season, with a nation-leading defense that allowed just 9.7 points per game. Offensively the Jackrabbits scored 38.4 points per game, which ranked third nationally.
In the playoff, the Jackrabbits went through Mercer, Villanova, and Albany winning all three games comfortably. That includes a 41-0 shutout of Mercer and a 59-0 shutout of Albany.
Montana's only loss came to Northern Arizona in late September. The Grizzlies are unbeaten since but have had some close calls. That continued into the playoffs. After blowing out Delaware 49-19 in the first round, the next two games went to overtime - a 35-28 win over Furman and a 31-29 win over North Dakota State.
