Coming into the final two games of the season, the River Hawks were in last place in the Hockey East standings with an overall record of 8-21-4 and a conference record of 4-15-3. The team had lost four games in a row prior to the first game against New Hampshire with the most recent coming against UMass in a 4-3 overtime loss. Jak Vaarwerk scored two unassisted goals for the River Hawks and the third goal was put in by Isac Jonsson on a power play, however, the team came up short after the Minutemen tied it up in the third and subsequently scored the game winning goal in overtime.

The Wildcats were sitting comfortably in sixth place coming into the weekend with a Hockey East record of 10-11-1 and an overall record of 17-14-1. Prior to Friday night's conference matchup against UMass-Lowell, New Hampshire was on a two game losing streak with the most recent being coming against No. 1 Boston College in a tight 1-0 defeat. The Wildcats held off the Eagles until the third period, but could not find the equalizer to push the game to overtime.
