With the first of a record 24 races set for this weekend at the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir, Bahrain, Formula 1 drivers get their first practice laps in on Thursday for the Bahrain Grand Prix. The driver lineup is unchanged from 2023, a first in F1 history, even with the news that Lewis Hamilton will leave Mercedes for Ferrari in 2025. As has been the case the last two seasons, the field is chasing Max Verstappen, who won his third consecutive world championship in dominating fashion last season, more than doubling the point total of runner-up Sergio Pérez, his Red Bull Racing teammate.

Verstappen won a record 16 races last season, breaking the mark he had set in 2022 and put together a historic 10-race winning streak. Red Bull romped to the constructor championship as well, with Verstappen and Pérez topping the podium after 21 of last season's 22 Grands Prix.
The lone non-Red Bull winner was Ferrari's Carlos Sainz, who won in Singapore in September. Sainz will be out of a seat at Ferrari next season to make room for the addition of seven-time world champion Hamilton.
Last year in Bahrain, Verstappen started from the pole and rolled to a nearly 12-second victory over Pérez, with Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin joining the Red Bull duo on the podium in his debut with his new team after team seasons with Alpine.
