Last season Ethiopia had winners in both the men’s and women’s fields. Gadisa Shumie (2:04:59) won in the men’s race while Jackline Chelal (2:20:29) won the women’s race one year after their fellow countrymen and women set the marathon time records.
The men’s time record was set by Ethiopia’s Asrar Abderehman at 2:04:43. That record has been broken multiple times over the past nine years with each winner finishing the race in under two hours and 10 minutes. Before that, no runner had finished the race in less than that time. Ethiopia has won the men’s race four times in a row and six times overall.
For the women’s race, Ethiopia’s Alemu Megertu (2:18:51) set the record last year. She became one of the six overall winners from Ethiopia and the one of three winners in the past four years. Ethiopia as a country is on a run as of late where the country could make history in the coming years as the most successful at the Seville Marathon.
