Jordan Luplow's two-run homer on Thursday gave the Braves an early 2-1 lead before birthday boy Michael Harris II added a solo shot in the fifth in Atlanta's 3-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox. Bryce Elder allowed a run and two hits in 3.1 innings, punching out six, and Matt Olson showed signs of breaking out with a 2-for-3 day.
Pittsburgh dropped a 6-4 decision to the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday night. Liover Peguero had two of the Pirates' five hits while Jake Lamb had an RBI single. Staff ace Mitch Keller gave up three runs on four hits over four innings in his longest outing so far in Florida.
Left-hander Max Fried takes the ball for the Braves on Friday after working two shutout innings his first time out. Lefty Marco Gonzales, acquired by Pittsburgh from Atlanta during the winter meetings after being initially dealt by the Seattle Mariners, looks to bounce back after he was roughed up for three runs on six hits in 1.2 innings in his Florida debut.
