Washington Capitals 2021-22 Season Preview
Last season, they lost in the first round to the Bruins, who finished third in the division, then Boston lost handily in the next round to the Islanders. The Capitals will look to break out of that playoff funk this season.
Even at 36, Alex Ovechkin remains an elite player for the Capitals. He signed a $47.5 million, five-year contract this offseason, and he moved into fifth place on the all-time scoring list in October. He is on pace to pass Jaromir Jagr and Brett Hull this season, and over the next few seasons he will be gunning for Wayne Gretzky's all-time record of 894.
While this roster skews older and they have several injuries, including a key one to center Nicklas Backstrom, the Capitals can take the next step if they are able to get more from their young players, especially their goalie tandem of Ilya Samsonov and Vitek Vanecek. If they each can get a good amount of games under their belts, they could provide stability in net.
