A dramatic 1-0 defeat to Porto in the Champions League has left a bad taste in Arsenal’s mouth ahead of the club’s return to domestic action at home to Newcastle on Saturday. The Gunners were on track for a worthwhile first-leg draw in Portugal before a Galeno wondergoal dashed their hopes in the 94th minute, leaving Mikel Arteta’s side with work to do when the sides reconvene in north London. For now, though, Arsenal turns its attention towards the Magpies in the hopes of keeping its Premier League title dream alive, hoping to move within two points of leader Liverpool with a home win.

One could hardly blame Arteta & Co. for feeling somewhat aggrieved at how things ended in Porto on Wednesday evening, bowing to a stoppage-time winner that truly was out of the top drawer.
David Raya has faced his criticism between the Gunners posts this season, but there was no blaming the Spaniard for conceding the kind of finish that deserves to go down in European memory:
The Gunners have still won their past five league games in a row and host a Newcastle team that hasn’t won at the Emirates Stadium since 2010.
Eddie Howe will be desperate to change that course following a run of five games unbeaten, however, not to mention the Magpies have won their past four road fixtures in a row.
Newcastle can also see some light at the end of the tunnel that’s been the recent injury crisis, with Alexander Isak expected to play some role in the attack on Saturday after returning to training this week.
It’s also possible Arsenal academy graduate Joe Willock will see some minutes against his old club after rejoining Howe’s squad, while the preferred pairing of Fabian Schar and Sven Botman should start in central defense.
Arteta was left seething with the officials after Anthony Gordon’s controversial goal gave Newcastle the win when these teams met back in November, with the Gunners requiring no added motivation to go for the three points at home.
