Sam Houston (21-11) won the Conference USA regular-season title at 13-3 and earned the top seed for the conference tournament, where it will take on No. 5 seed UTEP (17-15) in a semifinal game at Propst Arena in Huntsville, Alabama on Friday afternoon. The Bearkats joined C-USA this season after two seasons in the Western Athletic Conference and are looking for their first NCAA tournament bid since 2010. That's the same year the Miners reached their most recent Big Dance. The winner advances to Saturday night's championship game, where it will play either seventh-seeded Middle Tennessee or the tournament's No. 3 seed, Western Kentucky.

Sam Houston cruised to a 78-59 quarterfinal win over No. 9 seed FIU on Wednesday with five players finishing in double figures, three of them reserves. Davon Barnes led the way with 15 points while Cameron Huefner came off the bench to drop in 12. Lamar Wilkerson scores 13.8 points per game and Barnes gets 13.6 points a night while Kian Scroggins averages 5.9 rebounds. He had 13 boards on Wednesday.
UTEP closed the game on a 24-3 run to knock off fourth-seeded Liberty 66-57 on Thursday in its quarterfinal matchup. Zid Powell scored 13 points and David Terrell Jr. had 12 in just 17 minutes of reserve action. Tae Hardy drops in 15.0 points per game and Powell averages 11.0 points and 5.0 rebounds.
The Bearkats swept two regular-season games from the Miners, who still lead the all-time series 8-2. Sam Houston picked up a 60-56 victory at home on Jan. 27 before taking a 65-54 decision at El Paso on Feb. 24. UTEP has won four straight games since that loss.
